Capacity Building
You may hear us talking about nonprofit capacity building. But what is it? And why does the Foundation care?
Nonprofit capacity building refers to activities that improve and enhance a nonprofit organization's ability to achieve its mission and sustain itself over time. Examples include: understanding fundraising and donor development; creating a usable strategic plan; identifying a communications strategy; improving volunteer recruitment; adopting new governance practices; identifying more efficient uses of technology; engaging in collaborations with community partners, and others. When capacity building is successful, it strengthens a nonprofit's ability to fulfill its mission over time and enhances the organization's ability to have a significant, positive impact on lives and communities.
The Foundation is very interested in nonprofit capacity building because we believe that if our nonprofits are as healthy and prosperous as they can be, the quality of life in our community will continue to be impacted by the important, life changing, and community changing work that they do. We believe so much in this, that we have formed a committee specifically to take a look at how we can help nonprofits reach their highest level of capacity.
