In an effort to have a more direct local impact with the dollars raised, the Fremont Area Alzheimer's Collaboration has partnered with the Fremont Area Community Foundation. Sixty percent of the monies raised by the committee will be donated directly to institutions doing cutting edge research in Alzheimer's disease, and the remaining forty percent will be given as grants to support caregiver education and programming in the Fremont area.
The Fremont Area Alzheimer's Collaboration recently awarded a $30,000 grant to help support the development of retinal and optic nerve imaging capabilities within the UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences Mind and Brain Health Laboratory to investigate and validate retinal and optic nerve biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease. Biomarkers are biological measures of the presence, progression and response to treatment of a disease condition. Read more in this article from the University of Nebraska Foundation's website.
The NU Foundation also created a video featuring Marv Welstead. Marv, a founder of the Fremont Area Community Foundation, was inspired to form the Fremont Area Alzheimer’s Committee after losing his wife, Jean, to Alzheimer’s Disease in 2009. View the video by clicking here.
