At its Feb. 9 quarterly meeting, the North Bend Area Community Foundation heard from three individuals requesting funds for projects.
North Bend Central Elementary School fifth grade teacher Becky Streff requested $1,200 for two projects, both Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) enriching. The first was for two Aqua-Port II Water Rocket Launchers. Students will make rockets out of recycled material and then be able to launch them. the second request was for funds to have raised garden beds built to plant vegetables and herbs to create more polinators and to harvest and use math in making food items in the fall.
The Morse Bluff American Legion Post 340 requested funds to renovate the flooring in their hall's kitchen, bathroom and entry way. Post commander Galen Johnson spoke of the need and requested $5,000 toward the project.
The third speaker was Carol Murray representing the Material Girls Quilt Guild requesting $1,300 for material to construct 36 Quilts of Valorto be presented to area veterans. This grant would have to go through the VFW since grants cannot go individuals or groups not tax-exempt.
The North Bend foundatio has been in existence for over 20 years and given out more than $300,000 in grants to various tax-exempt organizations in the area. During this Valentine week, donating to the foundation would be a way to show your love of your community. Other foundations in the community include North Bend Central, the library and the VFW, all welcoming tax-exempt donations.
After the presentations by the individuals, the grants were discussed and approved as requested.
It was reported that 950 foundation newsletters had been sent out and nine coupons had been returned with donations of $1,075. The foundation functions on tax-exempt donations that support grants benefitting the community.
NBACF will participate in the Big Give in May organized by the Fremont Area Community Foundation. Pat Beebe and Diane Hines will chair this event. Dropping off donations at Platte Valley Bank will be encouraged to avoid handling fees.
Deb Andrews showed the tree name plates that Maynard Flamme will place by the trees planted to celebrate the Fremont and North Bend respective foundations' 40 and 20 year anniveraries.
The next meeting will be held May 11, 4 p.m., at the Historic Platte Valley Bank.
